In 2025, the Fast & Furious family will come together once more to film the final movie in the main saga led by Vin Diesel. Yet, according to NBCUniversal Studio Chief Donna Langley, the franchise still has untapped stories that could transition to television. Since its inception over 20 years ago with Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker, the franchise has evolved significantly. What began with three lower-budget films laid the groundwork for what would become one of the most successful series in cinematic history, particularly after the fourth film, Fast & Furious, which redefined the franchise with its iconic action scenes.
As the franchise edges toward its conclusion with Fast X and the upcoming final installment, the door remains open for further explorations. Spin-offs like Hobbs & Shaw have already shown the potential for expanding the universe, and there are talks about a movie featuring all the women from the franchise. But television also presents a promising avenue for new stories.
Donna Langley discussed with Variety the success NBCUniversal has had with other intellectual properties transitioning from film to TV, such as Pitch Perfect and Ted. She hinted that the Fast & Furious franchise might follow suit.
Interestingly, Langley mentioned that the final film might shift focus slightly from the high-octane action that has characterized recent entries, perhaps returning to the elements that made the original film a success.
While no live-action TV projects have yet been developed for the Fast & Furious universe, the animated series Fast & Furious Spy Racers, which aired on Netflix from 2018 to 2021, demonstrated the franchise’s potential on the small screen. The show followed Tony Toretto, the cousin of Vin Diesel’s character, and his endeavors to thwart a criminal organization through clandestine racing. It reached a younger audience and enjoyed a successful run of six seasons.
The potential for expanding the Fast & Furious saga on television is evident, offering fans new stories and different formats to enjoy their favorite characters and high-speed adventures.
